Rakesh Gera, Physician
Physician Registration
To work as a physician in Manitoba, you must apply to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM)* for a credential review.
Language assessment is strongly encouraged. Participation in courses like the Canadian Communication for Physicians Trained Abroad program (CCPTA)** is recommended but not mandatory.
You must then meet the criteria to apply for Assessment, which includes passing Part 1 and/or Part 2 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination. The Clinicians Assessment and Professional Enhancement Process helps determine whether you will be granted conditional registration for licensure with CPSM. A candidate has up to seven years to obtain the Certificate of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
When Rakesh arrived in Canada in 1999, he lived in Ontario and applied to several different provinces to be licensed as a doctor. It wasn't until Rakesh applied for the Medical Licensure Program for International Medical Graduates in Manitoba in 2006 that he was successful in having his credentials recognized. He arrived in Manitoba that year and, after living here for six months, he was accepted to participate in the examination and assessment process. Rakesh obtained his full medical registration with CPSM in January 2008.
