Mahawa sold goods to retail outlets in Sierra Leone before she took the necessary training to get a teaching certificate. She taught elementary (primary) school children before immigrating to Canada.
Becoming certified as a teacher in Canada would require additional training. Because her husband is currently working toward the same goal of teaching, Mahawa found work as a dietary aide to support her family.
