QUALIFICATION RECOGNITION - WIN Program

I found out about the Workplace Integration of Newcomers (WIN)* Program through my cousin. They assess your skills and then give you a custom training program that fills any gaps you have so you can qualify as a welder in Canada.

I had an eight-week program in MIG (metal inert gas) and TIG welding at the Winnipeg Industrial Skills Training Centre (WISTC), followed by a placement at Motor Coach Industries (MCI). At MCI, they assessed me and offered me employment.

I got a certificate from WISTC and a Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB)** ticket from my training.

*Note: This program is no longer offered but other programs may be available.

**Note: There are two main kinds of welding certification in Manitoba and employer requirements can vary. The Canadian Welding Bureau can certify you for particular types of welding, or you can apprentice for three years to earn your Red Seal Certification, which allows you to work in the trade across Canada.
