Joao originally planned to continue his career in photography in Canada. However, he found there was not enough work in that industry, so he pursued work as a lighting technician through Film Training Manitoba.

Now, as a gaffer, he manages the lighting crew on set. He has found that his past experience lends itself nicely to his new line of work.
